Beyond Friday Night Lights: Why Non-UIL Sports Deserve a Voice
By Cyndi Bell
Many Texas student-athletes are left out of UIL support. Discover why backing non-UIL sports like lacrosse matters—and how you can help change the game.

Today, June 11, 2025, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) convened its Legislative Council Meeting right here in Austin. For those unfamiliar, UIL is the governing body for most public school competitions in Texas, from football and marching band to academic contests. However, what you may not realize is that behind the headlines about playoffs and championship brackets, there is a growing push to expand opportunities beyond the traditional scope.
This meeting wasn't just about sports scores. It brought together an incredible mix of educators, advocates, and community leaders who are deeply passionate about giving students more opportunities to express themselves through ballet folklórico, bowling, gymnastics, lacrosse, flag football, and many other activities.
These are the activities that build character, open doors to scholarships, and help young people find their passion and purpose. And yet, many of these programs still fall outside UIL's official support.
The Hard Truth About Non-UIL Sports
As a lacrosse mom, I know this struggle firsthand.
When the UIL doesn't recognize a sport, it means students and families shoulder the entire burden:
- We rent practice fields from the schools or other facilities.
- We pay for all our equipment.
- We hire and fundraise for coaches.
- We don't have access to the locker room, weight room privileges, or equal scheduling priority.
In a state as proud of its public school programs as Texas, this exclusion creates fundamental inequity. And it doesn't just affect lacrosse—it impacts cheer, dance, martial arts, and other vibrant, life-shaping activities that remain outside the UIL umbrella.
What Can We Do?
If you're a local business owner, parent, coach, or just someone who believes in the power of extracurricular activities, here's how you can help:
✅ Sponsor a local team or student – Your support can cover gear, field time, or travel expenses.
✅ Show up – Attend games and performances. Your presence matters.
✅ Advocate – Contact your school board or UIL reps. Voice your support for expanding UIL inclusion.
✅ Donate space or services – If you own a venue or can offer promotional help, that's invaluable.
Because It's Bigger Than the Game
Every child deserves a chance to find their tribe, to compete, to belong, and to dream of scholarships and opportunities that can change the course of their life. When we support activities outside the UIL spotlight, we're telling students: Your passion matters. You matter.
So, whether it's lacrosse, folklórico, bowling, or ballet, let's rally for equity in extracurricular activities. Let's build a future where every student has the tools to thrive on and off the field.
